Yankees, Orioles keep winning

Here's how the pennant races look with exactly two weeks left:

? AN EXTRA GOOD TIME: The Orioles and Yankees sure had a lot of fun on Wednesday. First, Ichiro Suzuki powered New York to a doubleheader sweep against Toronto. Then Adam Jones hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning and Baltimore earned its 15th consecutive extra-innings win with a 3-1 victory at Seattle. The AL wild card-leading Orioles were coming off an 18-inning win against the Mariners on Tuesday night.

When the day was over, the Yankees had a half-game advantage over the Orioles in the wild AL East ? baseball's tightest race heading down the stretch.

? LUCKY BREAK: Matt Kemp was credited with crossing home to give the Dodgers a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning of the second game of their doubleheader at Washington, even though TV replays showed the last out already had been recorded on third baseman Ryan Zimmerman's head-over-heels, reaching tag of runner Adrian Gonzalez. Kemp then hit a go-ahead homer in the ninth to send Los Angeles to a 7-6 victory and an important split of the two games.

? REASON FOR CONCERN: Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat and was expected to stay overnight in a Chicago hospital. He missed the Reds' 6-5 victory over the Cubs and hopes to rejoin the team on Friday.

Cincinnati lowered its magic number to clinch a playoff spot to one with the Dodgers splitting a doubleheader at Washington. The Reds' magic number for a second NL Central title in three years is three.

? NEXT UP: Angels right-hander Zack Greinke (5-2, 3.78 ERA) faces Rangers rookie Yu Darvish (15-9, 4.02 ERA) as the AL West powers conclude a three-game series in Southern California.

? CHASE CHATTER: "The only thing that's going to mean anything to me is when we clinch the pennant. That's the only thing, the only number, I'm concerned with," Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson said.

Crude up; below $96 on growth worries, Saudi action

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - U.S. crude edged up on Wednesday, snapping two days of falls, but remained under $96 a barrel as a renewed focus on a weak global economy and indications that the world's top oil exporter Saudi Arabia is pumping more oil held back the market.

FUNDAMENTALS

U.S. crude for October delivery rose 31 cents to $95.60 per barrel by 7.18 p.m. EDT. U.S. October crude which expires on Thursday, settled at $95.29 a barrel in the previous session, below the 200-day moving average of $95.57. U.S. November crude was up 29 cents at $95.91 a barrel.

London's Brent crude for November delivery was down 24 cents at $111.70 a barrel.

A senior Gulf source said Saudi Arabia is working to lower oil prices and is producing around 10 million barrels per day, putting additional pressure on oil prices. OPEC members and other producers would be increasing output over the next few months to limit any further spike in prices.

U.S. crude stocks rose 2.4 million barrels last week, the industry group American Petroleum Institute said on Tuesday, a bigger rise than expected.

Crude and distillate stocks were expected to be up 1.0 million barrels, with gasoline inventories up 1.2 million barrels, a Reuters survey of analysts taken ahead of weekly reports showed.

A trader pressing the wrong key was not the likely cause of a plunge in oil prices on Monday, Commissioner Bart Chilton of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission told Reuters.

China posted a monthly capital outflow in August for the third time this year, likely prompted by investors pulling funds from the country in the face of slowing growth and rapidly deteriorating corporate profits.

MARKET NEWS

A stronger dollar <.dxy> on Tuesday also weighed on oil prices, as the euro fell against the U.S. currency on uncertainty about whether or not debt-stressed Spain will request a bailout. A strengthened U.S. currency can put pressure on dollar-denominated commodities such as oil.

The euro dropped 0.58 percent. The yen was also pressured, with speculation that the Bank of Japan might loosen policy on Wednesday following last week's move by the U.S. central bank.

Chick-fil-A agrees to stop funding anti-gay groups, lawmaker says

(Chick-fil-A)

Chick-fil-A, the fast food chain that sparked a firestorm earlier this year after its president made public comments against same sex marriage, has agreed to stop funding anti-gay groups, a Chicago alderman says.

Joe Moreno, the alderman whose opposition of a proposed Chick-fil-A on Chicago's north side helped fuel the controversy, told the Chicago Tribune the company has pledged to include a statement of respect for all sexual orientations in a memo to staffers and has promised that the WinShape Foundations, its not-for-profit arm, would no longer contribute money to groups that oppose gay marriage.

The memo, "Chick-fil-A: Who We Are," will be distributed to all corporate employees and restaurant operators, encouraging them to "treat every person with honor, dignity and respect--regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender," Moreno said.

In a letter to the alderman, the company said WinShape is "taking a much closer look at the organizations it considers helping, and in that process will remain true to its stated philosophy of not supporting organizations with political agendas."

Since 2003, the non-profit has donated millions of dollars to groups that promote "traditional marriage," including as Focus on the Family and the National Organization for Marriage. According to the Civil Rights Agenda, a Chicago-based LGBT advocacy group that worked closely with Moreno, Chick-fil-A executives "clarified that they will no longer give to anti-gay organizations."

Earlier this year, Dan Cathy, Chick-fil-A president and chief operating officer, said in a radio interview that "we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, 'We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage.'"

"I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about," he said.

In an interview with the Baptist Press, Cathy doubled down on his stance against same-sex unions.

"Guilty as charged," Cathy said. "We are very much supportive of the family?the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that."

The comments sparked protests and counter-protests at Chick-fil-A stores.

The company, founded by Dan's father, Truett Cathy, in 1946, has a history of "unapologetic social conservatism," as the Daily Caller put it. All 1,608 of its stores are closed on Sundays, a day of rest for most Christians.

According to Queerty.com, the WinShape Foundation?Chick-fil-A's charitable arm?donated more than $1.1 million between 2003 and 2008 to anti-LGBT groups, doubling that amount to $2 million in 2009.

NY Fed manufacturing contracts in Sept, lowest in 3-1/2 years

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Factory activity in New York state contracted for a second month in a row in September, falling to its lowest level in nearly 3-1/2 years as new orders shrank further, a report from the New York Federal Reserve showed on Monday.

The New York Fed's "Empire State" general business conditions index dropped to minus 10.41, from minus 5.85 in August, frustrating economists' forecasts for an improvement to minus 2, according to a Reuters poll. It was the lowest level since April 2009.

The survey of manufacturing plants in the state is one of the earliest monthly guideposts to U.S. factory conditions. The sector contracted in August for the first time in 10 months.

A major contributor to the U.S. recovery as the economy emerged from recession, manufacturing has been faltering in recent months.

Forward-looking new orders tumbled to minus 14.03 from minus 5.50. The measure was at its lowest level since November 2010.

Employment gauges deteriorated also. The index for the number of employees fell to 4.26 from 16.47 and the average employee workweek index slipped to minus 1.06 from 3.53.

"It tells you the economy is still pretty weak. I think when you add it all up, the numbers are still suggesting growth, but it's pretty weak growth," said Jim O'Sullivan, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics.

U.S. stock opened modestly lower after a run-up that left the S&P 500 at its highest level in nearly five years.

Manufacturers were less gloomy about the future, with the index of business conditions six months ahead rising to 27.22 from 15.20. The gauge of new orders in six months jumped to 17.02 from 2.35.

While the regional manufacturing reports can be volatile, analysts use them as guideposts for their forecasts for the larger national manufacturing survey, due at the beginning of October. That report from the Institute for Supply Management has shown manufacturing activity has contracted for the last three months.

Other data has been less dire. A different measure of U.S. manufacturing activity from private data ventor Markit has shown growth is sluggish but not contracting. A preliminary reading released later this week is expected to show Markit's manufacturing purchasing managers index held at 51.5, slightly above the 50 level that indicates expansion.

The drop in the New York state data "is probably overdoing some of the gloom," said Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics.

"Nonetheless, industry is clearly struggling to cope with the overseas slowdown."

The Federal Reserve last week announced a new aggressive stimulus program to try to boost an economy that has been hampered by weaker global growth prospects, uncertainty surrounding the euro zone's debt crisis and high unemployment at home.

The economy slowed to a 1.7 percent pace of growth in the second quarter, and many economists expect it is currently not faring much better.

A Danish researcher has compared two of the most different welfare systems in the western world. Despite the differences, the research shows surprising similarities in the way in which people in the USA and Denmark perceive the deservingness of welfare recipients.

This is one of the conclusions presented in a research article by the highly recognised American Journal of Political Science.

- The question of whether a person deserves help or not triggers a number of deep psychological processes. No matter where we come from, whether we are right or left-wing - it is in our genes, so to speak, explains PhD Michel Bang Petersen, who has studied the fundamental mental short cuts that people take when assessing the right to social welfare.

Universal hunter's instinct

The dominating criterion when deciding whether a person deserves support or not is an assessment of whether he or she is lazy or has basically been unlucky in life.

So far, research has thought that the deservingness criterion was socially and culturally acquired. And also that the workings of the welfare system in itself reinforce this assessment criterion as it teaches us to take a stand. However, Michael Bang Petersen rejects this notion:

- At least it has nothing to do with the welfare system. It does not tally with the way in which the system works in Denmark at all.

Rather, his findings suggest that a deep psychological instinct is triggered which dates all the way back to the older Stone Age.

- Probably because in the Stone Age, hunting was to some extent about luck. Those who shared their food with others were the ones who survived. In this way, the instinct has survived until the present day, says Michael Bang Petersen.

In other words, the instinct which in the Stone Age helped people decide whether their neighbour had simply been unlucky or was just plain lazy has survived until modern times, simply because the hunters who shared with each other were also the ones who survived the harsh conditions at the time.

Advanced psychological method

Michael Bang Petersen has compared the most different welfare systems in the western world and found out what respondents remember about various complex issues. In cases where the deservingness criterion was dominant, the respondents remember only that one aspect. The fact that this aspect tends to obliterate all other aspects of a case from our memory, regardless of whether we are from the USA or Denmark, is a sign that it is deeply rooted in our consciousness.

Facts:

Mental shortcuts, also known as heuristics, are strategies that help our brains to construct opinions about complex issues. Simply because we cannot keep track of every little detail in the world that we experience. Mental shortcuts are also what allow us t rd txts without vowels.

We take similar mental shortcuts when having to decide whether a person deserves our help. Even though we know perfectly well that the question is not that simple, we simplify it anyway to construct a subjective opinion: Does he deserve help because he has been unlucky, or does he not deserve help because he is lazy and to blame for his unfortunate situation.

Dr. Thomas Szasz dies at 92; psychiatrist who attacked profession

Dr. Thomas Szasz, the New York psychiatrist whose Don Quixote-like attacks on the psychiatric profession in the 1960s and 1970s led him to a position of prominence and influence before his radical ideas fell into disrepute and he faded into obscurity, has died. He was 92.

Szasz died Sept. 8 at his home in Manlius, N.Y., his family announced. He suffered from a spinal-compression fracture that resulted from a fall.

He came to prominence with his 1961 book, "The Myth of Mental Illness," in which he argued that mental illness was not a disease but simply "problems in living." In that and a series of subsequent tomes, he argued against using drugs to treat mental disorders, using insanity as a defense against criminal acts and committing people to mental institutions against their will. He called the latter act "a crime against humanity."

In 1992, Szasz ? pronounced "zoz" ? boldly told the Syracuse Post-Standard: "I am probably the only psychiatrist in the world whose hands are clean. I have never committed anyone. I have never given electric shock. I have never, ever given drugs to a mental patient."

Perhaps his most controversial act was allying himself with the Church of Scientology to found the Citizens Commission on Human Rights, a group that sharply opposed psychiatry and its methods of treatment. Although Szasz was not a Scientologist, his cooperation lent a veneer of credibility to an organization inspired not by science but by a science-fiction writer, according to his critics.

He later distanced himself from the church, but his association with the commission and his other views led New York mental health authorities to block him from teaching at a state hospital where residents with the State University of New York trained.

The crusader emerged at a time when many critics were questioning some tenets of psychiatry, particularly such actions as diagnosing women as "hysterical" when they refused to bow to the dominance of men or claiming that homosexuality was a mental illness. Some critics even agreed that too many "mentally ill" people were being locked away without proper justification.

But Szasz, in effect, threw the baby out with the bathwater, arguing that the vast majority of psychiatric diagnoses were ill-conceived and scientifically baseless.

Nonetheless, his arguments did introduce some new ideas, Dr. Robert W. Daly, a psychiatrist at SUNY Upstate Medical Center, conceded to the Syracuse Post-Standard: "The discussion of the use of coercion and forced treatment and all that, I think he had a real impact on the discussion of those matters within the profession and within the law itself. He helped sensitize everybody to what, in fact, they were doing."

In a 2006 profile in The New Atlantis, Szasz virtually conceded that he had been tilting at windmills. "I really don't think I am falsifying it when I say I never had much hope of having an impact on psychiatry. I viewed psychiatry all along as more like the Catholic Church. What impact did Voltaire make on it? If you think about what happened since then, nothing! No, I didn't expect to make any difference."

Thomas Stephen Szasz was born April 15, 1920, in Budapest, Hungary. After his family immigrated to the United States in 1938, he received a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Cincinnati in 1941. When he earned a medical degree from the university he was valedictorian of his class in 1944.

He studied psychoanalysis at the University of Chicago and, except for two years in the Naval Reserve, worked at the university before joining in 1955 what is now SUNY Upstate. He remained on the faculty until he retired in 1990 but continued writing and researching until his death.

Two years after his retirement, he was sued for malpractice by the widow of a man who committed suicide six months after Szasz told him to stop taking lithium for his depression. The case was settled out of court, and Szasz eventually gave up private practice.

Over half a century, Szasz published 35 books and hundreds of articles.

His wife, Rosine, died in 1971. He is survived by two daughters, Dr. Margot Szasz Peters and Suzy Szasz Palmer; a brother, George; and a grandson.

The Balance Scale of Wellness

Recently I had coffee with a friend who just returned fromAfricawhere he went on safari, among other pursuits, and toured the villages that line the roadways in that mostly depressed continent. He was duly impressed by both the poverty of the citizens and the happy mood most displayed when encountered. When he returned home, he said he looked around at what he had in his very comfortably furnished home and wondered aloud about why he needed all he saw. That was more than just an observation, it was a profound declaration. And it made me realize that wellness is more than just what we have that makes us happy. It?s also what we don?t have, or better yet, what we shouldn?t have that is at least as important.

It is an axiom in our society that most people spend in proportion to their income. Happy at $50,000 per year, most feel the need to increase their spending when their income reaches $100,000 per year. That begs the question, what additional purchases have been made that incrementally increase happiness and wellbeing. If we are happy at one level of income, why do we feel the need to spend twice as much when our income doubles? Often it is about keeping up with the Joneses. Or succumbing to the pressures of our children who now want Michael Jordan sneakers at $150 a pair, when earlier, a $25 pair sufficed. This phenomenon isn?t only found in the middle or upper middle class. One need not venture far to see even poor people wearing such outrageous garments when a celebrity attaches their name to the cloth or the shoe. Or consider the diamond ring so expensive it cannot be worn safely in public and instead resides in a safe-deposit box in the local bank. Do we need another, and more expensive, coffee table in the living room? Or a more expensive bed cover with lace borders rather than just plain borders? Or a swimming pool that really doesn?t increase the value of our home much at all? Maybe we think we?re doing it for the children?s future.

Most of us surely want more for our children than we had but is that good for them? Are we becoming a parental set of enablers that teach our children to shop for the most expensive even when we know we, and later on they, cannot afford it? The credit card companies bear an element of responsibility in all this. But that?s another issue. For us, the important idea is balancing what we have with what we shouldn?t have regardless of whether we can afford it or whether we sacrifice to achieve it.

The most obvious financial question becomes what should we do with the excess money if we don?t spend it on increasing satisfaction with increasing income? I wonder if a savings account ever crossed the mind of those whose income just increased. Saving for a time when unemployment rears its ugly head, or saving for disasters in the family over and above that covered by insurance seem a reasonable use of excess funds. Happiness and wellbeing are about enjoying our life with what we have, not with what we can afford.

We are constantly bombarded by advertising to entice us to buy things we heretofore have easily done without. Electronics have led the way. Do we really need an iPhone, iPad, iPod, Android, Blackberry, blueberry, strawberry, or any of the other berries now on, or likely to be on, the market? Some of them increase our security and that of our children and those definitely increase our wellbeing by reducing our anxiety for their safety. But the rest? Not likely.

The balance scale of wellness goes much further than just purchases. It encompasses attitudes, beliefs, arguments, tensions, conflicts, relationships, affairs, feelings. Most of us carry some baggage with us that should have been discarded long ago. And with baggage come tension, and worry, and often deceit. When confronted with issues that have remained hidden for long periods, most people agree that brought out in the open means a release from internal conflicts that have plagued them for decades.

A personal review of those concepts we might have within ourselves will likely determine what we keep and what we should do without. Harboring grudges long beyond their immediate value gain us nothing. Tensions hidden need to be open to the light of reason and then dismissed. There are a myriad of personal issues that fall on the side of the wellness scale requiring riddance forever. Relationships, particularly within families, need mending before death makes them moot. It is likely most of us have looked within ourselves and determined that many issues we harbor should be resolved and gotten rid of. But making it a more formal plan by treating wellness as much of what we shouldn?t have as well as what we ought to have makes resolving them so much easier. While you are creating a wellness atmosphere within your home and yourself, make a list of those wellness issues that you should do without, just as you would for those physical purchases you shouldn?t have made. Make it a sort of spring house cleaning of the mind, the body, our surroundings, our relationships, our fears, our transgressions, even our beliefs.

The balance scale of wellness can enhance one?s feeling of wellbeing. While the Scale of Justice is blind, our Wellness Scale should be out in the open, reviewed regularly, given brutally honest treatment, and maintained in a delicate balance. In our search for wellbeing what we shouldn?t have is as important and relevant as what we should have.

Improving Your Life As You Improve Your Home | arrowquality.com

Most of your life is spent in your house or at work. Therefore, your home environment can have a massive affect on your mindset and mood. If your home provides comfort and security, you will be more capable of getting rest and coping with stress. The suggestions in this article will show you how you can convert your house into a retreat. forpressrelease.com

Don?t forgot to consider your comfort when you are deciding on home improvements! If there is a part of your house that will not allow you to be comfortable, consider changing it. The value of comfort is often overlooked, but it is certainly essential to the enjoyment of life. You can make your life easier by replacing an uncomfortable chair or lower shelves that are too tall. It?s easy to underestimate the big difference a small change can make.

Increase the size of your interior space. Over time, the space in your home can become insufficient, no matter how many times you move things around. In these cases, you may want to think about expanding onto your home. You can create even the smallest of extensions to make your space feel more open. bignewsnetwork.com

When you are looking to increase the fun factor of your home, consider recreational home improvements like a swimming pool or a hot tub. These features may not suit your taste, but they can be attractive to people looking to buy a home. You might also want to think about adding a fitness room or adding something relatively minor, such as a basketball hoop. When adding things, such as these, to your home can make it more valuable. bignews.biz

Take a look at your lighting. Changing your lighting situation can ease eyestrain, illuminate a dark corner to make it more usable or comfortable, and change the whole look of your home.

Installing new lights or, even easier, switching out existing ones is a quick and easy home improvement project, too. Installing a new light fixture offers instant gratification. ubranka-dla-dzieci.stylek.pl

Having plants everywhere is very important. They not only look great, they are mood boosting as well. Your yard can become a small green oasis where you love spending time. Hire a gardener to do the work for you if you don?t have the skills. You can also gain the benefits of greenery with house plants. These will create a relaxing atmosphere and improve air quality in your home. Planting a garden, whether flower, herb or produce will encourage you to get out and enjoy the paradise you created.

Don?t forget the outside of your home when looking into home improvement projects. Change the color of the roof, and you will improve the look. Small improvements will not only increase the value of your home, but will make it seem more inviting and welcoming to you and your guests.

Since you spend so much of your time at home, it is vital that you enjoy being there. Continuously improving your home can help you feel comfortable with how it looks, and also dramatically increase the resale value.

Romney hits Obama on looming "fiscal cliff"

BELMONT, Massachusetts (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney accused President Barack Obama on Saturday of standing by while a looming budgetary calamity unfolds in Washington as he sought to regain his footing after a tough week on the campaign trail.

Romney leaped into the debate over the "fiscal cliff," the potential for an end-of-the-year uproar when some $109 billion in across-the-board spending cuts kick in unless Obama and Congress reach a deficit-reduction deal to avert them. Bush-era tax cuts also expire at year's end.

The Washington debate mirrors the campaign battle between Obama and Romney. Democrats want to make up the shortfall by increasing taxes on wealthy Americans while Republicans favor spending cuts.

"Political gridlock threatens to plunge us back into recession, but instead of seeking bipartisan solutions, President Obama is passively allowing us to go over a fiscal cliff," Romney said in his weekly podcast.

The White House said in releasing a breakdown of the cuts on Friday that it was congressional Republicans who are standing in the way of a deal because they refuse to accept a more balanced approach.

The White House and Congress, Democrats and Republicans, including Romney's vice presidential running mate, Paul Ryan, agreed on the automatic cuts under an August 2011 deal.

Romney, who has vowed to build up the U.S. military if elected on November 6, has singled out for criticism the $54 billion in defense cuts that would kick in at year's end. He says this is no time to shrink the Pentagon's budget.

"What kind of commander-in-chief forces Americans to choose between massive tax hikes that will undermine the economy and massive cuts to our military that will undermine national security?" said Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul.

Romney is ending a rough week during which he fell behind Obama in the polls and came under criticism from Democrats and some Republicans for making a campaign issue of the deaths of four Americans killed by Muslim protesters at the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.

The candidate took the day off on the campaign trail on Saturday. He spent part of the afternoon watching one of his grandson's soccer games. Romney travels to Colorado and California on Sunday.

Your Business and Social Media (No 'Brochureware'... Please ...

A recent Fortune?article?made an interesting point about the social media efforts of most companies:?

?

?Most companies? early efforts with social [media] have been the equivalent of

?brochureware? (just?as they were on the internet back in the 1990s). And

although levels of sophistication are?growing?most social

commerce?experiments have a long way to go.?

?

If the goal of your company?s social media efforts is to engage with your customers and facilitate communication with them, what do you need to do other than have your social media accounts be ?brochureware? for your company? Just like your company has (hopefully) embraced the power of a good website, in order to keep up with the times you need to engage actively on social media or be left behind.

?

1. Knowledge is POWER

The first thing you must to do is understand the nature of the beast. One cannot use social media or understand its power unless you have at least a basic understanding of what it is generally?and the major platforms that are available to use.

Popular platforms social media include:

 • Facebook: Currently the largest social network on the internet, built on the concept of friend-to-friend connections. 995+ million monthly active users.
 • Twitter: Facilitates real-time personal ?status updates? through short broadcasts (up to 140 characters) to other subscribers. 500+ million active users.
 • LinkedIn: An online networking community for business people. 161+ million active professional users
 • Pinterest: Users organize and share photos they find on the web via virtual pinboards. 10+ million monthly active users.
 • Google+: Google?s answer to Facebook, users can share content and connect. 250+ million active users.
 • Sina Weibo: The Chinese version of twitter, with seamless integration of pictures and videos. 300+ million users. 22% of the Chinese population is on Sina Weibo.
 • Ren Ren: The Chinese remake of Facebook. 160+ million users, with 31+ million active monthly users.
 • Blogs: A web site on which an individual or group of users record opinions, information, etc. on a regular basis. i.e. You are reading a blog post right now.

Using social media for your company broadens the audience for your messages significantly. Additionally it gives you another avenue to engage and communicate with your customers.?66%?of adult online users own and actively engage with one or more of these social media platforms. Social media is giving the world the ability to connect and communicate with each other in ways that were never possible before.

CAUTION: Social media is a fantastic tool to engage and communicate with your customers, but there are some key facts you need to be aware of when using social media in order to be successful at it.

?

2. Have a PLAN

One huge draw for social media is that there is no cost to sign-up for most social media platforms. However, sometimes it does cost to upgrade your account from the basic model, but for all intensive purposes it is a free tool for your company to use.

Social media accounts may be free to sign-up for, but engaging with audiences on the various systems can be extremely time consuming, therefore the ?labour? can quickly become quite costly. To avoid this, set and keep a time limit for how long you want to spend on social media each day and stick to it.

Also be cautious about what you post. Make sure you thoroughly read the links you post so you know what they say, and do not post anything that could reflect poorly on your company. During the London 2012 Olympics, two athletes ? a female athlete from Greece and a male athlete from Sweden ? were kicked off their respective Olympic teams for racist remarks they each posted on their respective twitter accounts. Social media is a fantastic tool for you to use, but if you?re not careful it can be turned against you.

Take a page out of the Internal Olympic Committee?s (IOC) book. They had strict guidelines regarding athletes? use of social media platforms and what constituted proper use of social media. While some people criticized the IOC for the attempting to ?limit free speech?, they were smart to acknowledge that prohibiting social media altogether would be impossible (for an interesting and opinionated wrap up of social media and the 2012 London Olympics see this Wired.com?article).

By creating a guideline and roadmap of what you would like to do and accomplish on the various social media platforms you can limit the amount of time spent on social media, keeping that labour cost under control, as well as head off some of the potential PR disasters that can result from not having a plan.

?

3. The MEDIUM is the MESSAGE

As fellow Canadian?Marshall McLuhan?(a renowned communications theorist) says ?the medium is the message?.

Social media should complement and NOT replace your existing marketing tools.

The potential audience for your social media marketing is massive, but it is just one method of getting your message out there. Do not disregard the effectiveness of traditional marketing initiatives. Also while your social media marketing does not need to be the exact same as your other marketing endeavours, it should not be completely different in tone and messaging as you do not want to confuse your customers.

Social media provides you with opportunities to continue to engage with your audiences? it gives your customers another avenue to research your company which can build further trust in your product.?[C1]

?

4. Be SELECTIVE

Be selective not only with what you choose to post but with what platforms you choose to use. For example, do not have a Pinterest account unless you believe that you can AND WILL use it (properly) to get your company?s message out there. This goes back to the point about social media being time consuming ? only use the platforms that are worthwhile because you can waste a lot of time using social media sites that in the end will have no affect on your goals. Also, unless you are going to ACTIVELY use your social media accounts do not have them. An inactive page reflects poorly on your company.

?

5. Social Media ENGAGEMENT

Use a social media engagement system, like?Hubblr. These systems help you save time as you can control your various social media accounts from one platform. A social media management tool enables you to spread your message with ease across all of the social media accounts you use. These management systems also have built in reporting metrics, which aids in justifying the time and money spent on social media efforts, something that can be difficult to otherwise quantify. Social media management systems can also be extremely useful in situations where you?re managing more than one brand?s social media accounts, allowing you to quickly move from account to account.? A good social media management system will also prevent you from accidently posting to the wrong client?s account. Additionally, most of these systems offer the option of scheduled tweets so you can pre-write posts.

?

In summary?? Have fun with your social media program, don?t be afraid to show your personality but make a plan so you ensure that your messaging remains clear and targeted to your relevant audiences. A note of reference I like to follow when doing my company social media posts; Is what I?m writing/saying something I?d be comfortable with my grandmother or elderly neighbour reading? If the answer is no, perhaps you need to re-consider what you?re about to post. Happy social media-ing!

Abstract (provisional)

Background

Nurses are an indispensable component of the work force in the health care system. However, many of them are known to work in a stressful environment which may affect their mental well-being; the situation could be worse in rapidly transforming societies such as China. The purpose of this study was to investigate anxiety symptoms and the associated factors in Chinese nurses working in public city hospitals.

Methods

A cross-sectional survey was performed for Chinese nurses in public city hospitals of Liaoning Province, northeast China. Seven hospitals in different areas of the province were randomly selected for the study. The Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale was used to measure anxiety symptoms. Effort-reward imbalance questionnaire and Job Content Questionnaire were used to assess the work stressors. Univariate analysis and stepwise multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to identify the factors associated with anxiety symptoms.

Results

All registered nurses in the seven city hospitals, totaling 1807 registered nurses were surveyed. Of the returned questionnaires, 1437 were valid (79.5%) for analysis. Utilizing the total raw score [GREATER-THAN OR EQUAL TO] 40 as the cut-off point, the prevalence of anxiety symptoms in these nurses was 43.4%. Demographic factors (education, chronic disease and life event), lifestyle factors (regular meals and physical exercise), work conditions (hospital grade, job rank, monthly salary, nurse-patient relationships, job satisfaction and intention of leaving), job content (social support and decision latitude), effort-reward imbalance and overcommitment were all significantly related to the anxiety symptoms. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed main factors associated with anxiety symptoms were lower job rank (OR 2.501), overcommitment (OR 2.018), chronic diseases (OR 1.541), worse nurse-patient relationship (OR 1.434), higher social support (OR 0.573), lower hospital grade (OR 0.629), taking regular meals (OR 0.719) and higher level of job satisfaction (OR 0.722).

Conclusions

A large proportion of Chinese nurses working in public city hospitals had anxiety symptoms, which warrants immediate investigation and intervention from the hospital administrators. Meanwhile, results of the study suggest that proper counseling, promotion of healthy lifestyle behavior and improvements to the social environment in the work place may be helpful toward reducing or preventing the anxiety symptoms.

Backroom Deals - Yeshiva World News

In a last-ditch effort to win, Theresa Ciccotto is using posters in her Bay Ridge neighborhood urging a vote for ?one of us? that some of our column?s readers view as anti-Semitic. This apparent appeal to Theresa?s neighbors to not vote for a Jewish candidate has, of course, not appeared in any Jewish neighborhoods only in the heavily non-Jewish neighborhoods such as Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights.

Yeshiva World News was sent a photo of one of these posters by an outraged reader. The photo was take on 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge. ?I can?t remember the last time I saw a judicial candidate publicly campaign on such an offensive slogan,? said one political consultant. ?I believe that the rules of judicial conduct may well prohibit this kind of negative campaigning for a judicial seat.?

As YWN reported yesterday, the 5th district judicial seat, which includes all of Borough Park, Bensonhurst and Bay Ridge, has traditionally been held by a Jewish Judge, but questions have arisen whether another Jewish candidate is running solely to siphon votes away from frum front-runner Shlomo Mostofsky.

?We need to send a clear message that this kind of campaign will not be tolerated in Brooklyn,? said a community leader. ?Everyone should go out and vote for Shlomo Mostofsky for Civil Court Judge.?

The importance of Civil Court Judges can not be overstated. Aside for their role in resolving traditional financial disputes including credit card and mortgage case,
Civil Court Judges are routinely promoted to higher levels of judgeship and are able to have a significant impact on the communities that they judge.

Shlomo Mostofsky shot to the front of this race for Judge after receiving the strong endorsement of Councilman David Greenfield who cited Mostofsky?s vast legal experience
and reputation for integrity and fairness. Greenfield?s endorsement was followed up with glowing statements attesting to Mostofsky?s leadership as an askan from HaRav Yisroel Belsky, Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zweibel and Rabbi Dovid Goldwasser among other community leaders.

For all intents and purposes the race will be decided in today?s Primary Election. Polls close today at 9pm.

Man pleads guilty in Facebook bigamy case after photos tipped off first wife

A Washington man whose wife discovered through Facebook that he had married a second woman has pleaded guilty to attempted bigamy.

Alan O'Neill, 42, was charged in March after his first wife learned of his second wife through a Facebook ?people you may know? notification and alerted authorities.

The second woman's profile photo showed her with Mr. O'Neill, dressed in fancy clothes and standing near a wedding cake, The Tacoma News Tribune reported Friday.

Mr. O'Neill, who was accompanied to court by the second woman, told Superior Court Judge Beverly Grant he never meant to commit a crime.

?I've never done anything intentionally wrong in my life,? he said Thursday.

O'Neill was spared jail time but will be on probation for a year. The charge is a gross misdemeanor.

He has annulled his second marriage and is divorcing his first wife.

His first wife, though, seems to have forgiven him. She wrote a letter of support, saying that the media coverage has been enough punishment.

?He just made a bad decision that hurt a few people's feelings and (brought) embarrassment to himself,? she wrote.

Mr. O'Neill's lawyer, Philip Thornton, told the judge his client tried to get a divorce from his first wife before he married the second one. Mr, O'Neill trusted a neighbor to process his divorce through Lincoln County, but the neighbor didn't file the paperwork, Mr. Thornton said.

?Mr. O'Neill failed to follow through on that,? Mr. Thornton said. ?He is extremely embarrassed and remorseful.?

Mr. O'Neill's future as a Pierce County jailer remains in question, however.

He is on unpaid leave. Sheriff Paul Pastor, who oversees the jail, will evaluate the results of an internal affairs investigation before deciding whether to allow Mr. O'Neill to come back to work, sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.

CDC reports incidents of tainted ricotta cheese

(AP) ? Federal health officials say ricotta cheese tainted with listeria bacteria is linked to 14 illnesses including at least one death.

The imported Italian ricotta salata cheese distributed by Forever Cheese, Inc., of New York is linked to illnesses in 11 states and the District of Columbia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Forever Cheese issued a recall of one lot? 800 wheels of ricotta salata, or roughly 4,800 pounds ? on Monday.

The cheese was distributed to retail stores and restaurants in California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington between June 20 and August 9.

Jeff DiMeo of Forever Cheese said the recalled Frescolina brand ricotta salata cheese is from one batch manufactured in Italy's Puglia region but would not name the Italian company that manufactured it. The Food and Drug Administration confirmed listeria was present in an uncut sample of cheese from that batch.

Most people who consumed the cheese would not know where it came from because it was distributed in large wheels for retailers or restaurants to break down into smaller servings or packages. Ricotta salata is a salty, white cheese made from pasteurized sheep's milk. It is not the same as soft ricotta cheese sold in tubs and used to make lasagna.

DiMeo said he would generally advise his customers not to hold on to the cheese for more than 30 days. The CDC, however, said the ricotta can have up to a four-month shelf life, so some consumers may still have it in their homes.

The company and the government advised consumers who may still have the cheese to ask retailers where it came from or just throw it out to be safe.

Listeria is rare but deadlier than well-known pathogens such as salmonella and E. coli. It is most dangerous to pregnant women, the elderly and others with compromised immune systems.

It was not immediately clear how many deaths were caused by the listeria outbreak. The CDC said listeriosis contributed to "at least one" of two deaths in New York and Nebraska but did not elaborate. A spokeswoman for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said Wednesday the department is investigating a death linked to the listeria and a spokeswoman for the Nebraska Department of Health said the same strain had contributed to the death of a woman in her 80s.

A third deceased person in Minnesota was infected with listeriosis linked to the cheese but that is not thought to be the primary cause of the person's death, a spokesman for the Minnesota Department of Health said.

Three people from Maryland reported becoming ill from the strain of listeria linked to the ricotta. One person each from California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia also reported an illness. Two of the illnesses were in newborn babies, the CDC said.
