New Syria mediator tells UN chief he is "scared"
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi told U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday that he was "honored, flattered, humbled and scared" at the prospect of leading international efforts to broker peace in Syria's worsening 17-month conflict.
Brahimi met with Ban for the first time since agreeing last week to replace Kofi Annan as the U.N. and Arab League joint special representative on Syria. While he is not due to take up the post officially until September 1, diplomats said Brahimi had already filled Annan's role.
"Secretary-General, when you called me I told you that I was honored, flattered, humbled and scared and I am still in that frame of mind," Brahimi told Ban, when the pair met in New York.
"The Syrian people, they will be our first masters. We will consider their interests above and before anyone else. We will try to help as much as we can, we will not spare any effort," he said. "Let's try and see what we can do."
Brahimi, who hesitated for days before accepting the job that France's U.N. envoy, Gerard Araud, called an "impossible mission," was meeting with U.N. officials on Friday to discuss plans for a new approach to the Syria conflict, which the United Nations says has killed over 18,000 people.
"The longer this fighting goes on, the more people will be killed, the more people will suffer," Ban said on Friday.
"Your (Brahimi's) leadership will be very important, you have the full respect and full support of international community. It is crucially important the Security Council, the whole United Nations system (is) supporting your role," he said.
Brahimi also met on Friday with Araud, president of the U.N. Security Council for August. Brieuc Pont, the spokesman of the French U.N. mission, said they discussed "numerous changes of his mission."
"They shared their extreme concerns about the situation in Syria. The president of the Security Council said he would organize an informal meeting of the Security Council with the joint special representative soon," Pont said.
Annan, a former U.N. secretary-general and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is stepping down after six months as the international Syria envoy because he said his peace plan was hampered by a divided U.N. Security Council.
Annan was especially frustrated by the deadlock among the five permanent council members.
Russia, backed by China, repeatedly vetoed Western- and Arab-backed resolutions that criticized the Syrian government and threatened it with sanctions, saying the United States, Europe and Gulf Arabs were seeking regime change.
The Western powers have accused Russia, Syria's top arms supplier and staunch ally, of propping up Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government. They have also accused Syria's ally Iran of providing military aid to Assad.
Brahimi told Reuters in an interview last Saturday that while in New York he wanted to urgently clarify what support the United Nations could offer him to ensure his mission had a better chance of success.

Love, relationships and sex?
In a?YouthPinoy!?interview, Ignacio explained young people?s ?true love? can be grounded and strengthened by values like modesty, self-control and fidelity and not by premature physical expression through sex.
She also stressed how abstinence, will not only protect young people from HIV-AIDS, but will also test ?true love.?
A 2006 study of young Cebua?os by Ushma Upadhyay revealed, girls whose emotional relationships moved quickly from crushes to ?going out? to exclusive relationships had sex earlier.
The study also suggested that teens who went through pre-coital behavior like kissing and petting fast are expected to have sex sooner.
Sex, not cheap
In June 2012 alone, 25% of HIV-AIDS cases or 74 out of 295 cases involved young people aged 15- 25 years.
The Philippine Catholic HIV and AIDS Network (PhilCHAN) and the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) believe promoting a more humanized message about love and sexuality can help address skewed ideas young people have about love and relationships.
Beginning SY 2013 ? 2014, Theology of the Body will be integrated into Catholic schools? curricula.
?If [sex] is treated as a precious gift, then you don?t carry it around like a cheap merchandise?Only authentic sexual values can protect us from HIV,? Ignacio explained.
Theology of the Body is based on a series of lectures given by Blessed John Paul II that focused on an integrated vision of man and his sexuality.
It teaches, among other things, that the body and the sexual relationship itself is a symbol of God?s undying love for humanity.
Parents at the center
Parents are apparently still important and influential in this area of young people?s lives.
Through the project ?Mainstreaming HIV in BECs?, the National Secretariat for Social Action (NASSA) aims to educate parents involved in basic ecclesial communities on HIV-AIDS, enabling them to talk about it, especially with their youngsters at home.
For Ignacio, this means more parents spending quality time with their children.
500 lay leaders and seminarians are expected to attend a HIV-AIDS workshop tomorrow at the San Carlos Seminary, Guadalupe to talk more about the pandemic that is affecting more and more young Filipinos.

Not since the 1970s had Hopkins faced Wayland in football, so the Vikings were looking forward to a meeting with their Allegan County rivals.
"These communities are very excited about football," Hopkins coach Cody Francis said. "I have told my players if you want to be competitive we needed to keep playing bigger schools, and we had a chance to go up against a solid program."
In preseason scouting, Francis saw Wayland and Hopkins were similar in terms of offensive lines, so Francis went for a solid game plan.
"Everything flowed well with the ball tonight," Francis said.
Hopkins held the shutout until the fourth quarter, courtesy of a pair of 7-yard touchdown runs by Joey McPeck and Nick Caywood. Zach Oostburn (four yards) and Jimmy Renberg (five yards) also scored on rushing touchdowns, and Kyle VanderSyde caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Joey McPeck.
